Notre Dame - produced in 1988 during Stephen`s European Tour and featured in his
second book Cities on page 16 - is a second to none example of his early,
innocent style. The work is privately owned and is now displayed at Stephen`s
London Gallery available for sale for a limited period.
Excerpt from Cities (Dent, 1989) by Anthony Clare:
"Since the programme (BBC QED) Stephen has had the thrill of seeing his work
widely appreciated and his drawings become sought after by would-be purchasers.
He has flown to the United States on a jumbo jet, seen and drawn the Empire
State Building, met and marvelled at Michael Crawford in The Phantom of the
Opera on Broadway. He has travelled to Paris and applied his draughtsman's
skills to drawing such majestic architectural achievements as Notre Dame and
the Pompidou Centre. His confidence has prospered and he has learned to read
and write. In short, the story of Stephen Wiltshire is the story of a talent
locked behind a wall of mental impairment which, on being released, has not
merely flourished but has enabled the impairments to be tackled and a whole
life transformed."
The original work measures 297 x 420mm (A3), drawn with pen and ink on matt art
paper and in excellent condition, signed and titled. Date: 27th of October
1988.
Price: £ 42,500
